How this calculator works
Each month, interest is charged on your remaining balance at the annual rate divided by 12. The rest of your fixed monthly payment reduces the balance itself. Because interest is calculated on a shrinking balance, early payments are mostly interest and later payments are mostly principal, even though the payment amount stays the same throughout.
An overpayment or one-off early repayment goes straight to the balance on top of what you owe. Because next month's interest is calculated on that now-smaller balance, the saving compounds over the rest of the term.
